what am I missing?

The speaker points out

that we don’t really have

much of a grasp of things,

not only the big things,

the important questions,

but the small everyday

things.

“How many steps up to your back yard?

What is the name of your district representative?

What did you have for breakfast?

What is your wife’s shoe size?

Can you tell me the color of your sweetheart’s eyes?

Do you remember where you parked the car?”

The evidence is overwhelming.

Most of us never truly experience life.

“We drift through life in daydream,

missing the true richness and joy that life has to offer.”

When the speaker has finished we gather around to sing a few inspirational songs.

You and I stand at the back of the group and hum along

since we have forgotten most of the words.

Mary Oliver reminds me

to let go of any need that might linger in me

to, even try, to impress anyone.

But to stay alert to the extravagant impressiveness around me,

puddling at my feet,

drowning my life with goodness.

To be easily astonished,

easily filled with wonder,

to let life boggle my mind.

To stay a child of joy and nature,

a collector of miracles.

To stay in awe of sunsets

and dandelions,

coffee shops

and grasshoppers.

To gasp every time I get a view of the ocean,

to be breathless at the view from a mountaintop road at sunset.

To feel wonder when I see a leaf change color.

To crane my neck, every single time, to catch a glimpse of sunlight on water,

to thrill everytime I touch the curve of a babies cheek.

To get a chill of macabre delight

at gnarly, old toenails,

and bats hanging upside down

in a dark damp cave,

or flying around a street light as darkness falls slowly through the air.

Such things keep me alive.

These are the true riches of our living.

Extreme miracles everywhere around us.

We are here to witness,

here to share descriptions of such beauty,

even our feeble attempts are so amazing

they boggle the mind.

Thank you, Mary Oliver, for this reminder,

with your every beautiful, glorious word.

We are each here to do our part,

to record our miracles

in our own voices,

pens,

paints,

dances,

lyrics,

artistry,

we make up this tapestry,

we record the blazing glory,

the divine masterpiece.

We each add notes to the grand symphony,

allowing the rocks to stay silent –

at least for those who

don’t care to listen for the exquisite, out-of-this-world music they share –

we play on through each day

with such brilliance, light and passion,

savoring delight,

everywhere we go…

until we are gone,

and those who come behind us

find it all fresh and new once more,

and begin to tell their part of the story,

in their own beautiful, unique ways.

gone fishing

There is sensual pleasure in a small act done well

My whole being loves how you cast that fishing rod

sight, sound, smell, touch, hearing all involved

observing,

absorbing,

thrilling;

It sticks with me and loops in my memory –

this beautiful dance of motion

playing again and again

the quick, sure whip of the rod,

the slow arc of the line against the blue sky before it breaks the water,

the vulture floating high in the blue and white, being themselves,

sure of their importance,

not questioning their beauty,

or the importance of their purpose,

the graceful, smooth winding of the reel,

the flash of the silver lure dancing below the surface of the green water

your patience as you teach me,

a very amature student –

all revealing a new layer of beauty,

I want to learn this rhythm,

my soul responds with deep desire,

I want to be a natural part of this world,

a silver flash,

a big blue sky.

Birds know north without looking.

Some fish have a line down their bodies

to sense electrical fields

or changes in water pressure.

Jumping spiders see ultraviolet.

Bees have a little compass of iron

and can read earth’s magnetic field.

And there’s a little silver thing in you

that listens to the Holy Spirit.

It’s really quiet, so you have to be quiet

to hear it listening, but it hears.

You don’t have to hear God;

just let the little silver thing in you

listen to the Spirit and speak

to the rest of your body.

you CAN see the forest

Blessings

occur.

Some days I find myself

putting my foot in

the same stream twice;

leading a horse to water

and making him drink.

I have a clue.

I can see the forest

for the trees.
All around me people

are making silk purses

out of sows’ ears,

getting blood from turnips,

building Rome in a day.

There’s a business

like show business.

There’s something new

under the sun.
Some days misery

no longer loves company;

it puts itself out of its.

There’s rest for the weary.

There’s turning back.

There are guarantees.

I can be serious.

I can mean that.

You can quite

put your finger on it.
Some days I know

I am long for this world.

I can go home again.

And when I go

I can

take it with me.

A toast to an unexpected Monday

Yes, my friend, a toast!

Unexpected mondays are one of my very favorite things

Along with the unexpected moments in everyday.

For many years

I have looked for,

and always have found

in each day,

moments

Where I find myself breathless

suspended in the aha’s

of ordinary miracles,

the sharing the laughter hidden in our days –

the glory in the grey.
I, under the shadow of Walt Whitman,

seeing the miraculous in it all.

The simple pleasures,

which take our breath away

and remind us of our gift.

this moment.

Nothing more important than

this ordinary day

opening before us

like a sparkling present to unwrap.

Slowly.

Taking great care with the paper,

lingering over untying the satin ribbon,

Letting it slid beneath our fingers

Savoring the feeling

of the silk

in all of our senses.

Especially on the tip of our tongue.

This is passion.

This is life!

when you’re ready

I don’t think that anything happens by coincidence. No one is here by accident. Everyone who crosses our path has a message for us. Otherwise they would have taken another path, or left earlier or later. The fact that these people are here means that they are here for some reason.

💞

I make a distinction between relationship challenges that are sourced in trauma and those sourced in developmental stages. Quite often, they are inextricably linked, but not always. Sometimes what is blocking someone’s emotional availability and fueling dysfunctional behavior is primarily related to unhealed  traumas. But sometimes the deeper issue is that they are at a different emotional stage. In the latter case, it is not simply a question of holding the space for their healing. It’s a question of waiting, often for years, in the hope that they reach the stage you are at. An impossible scenario, both because you will have to stop growing yourself if they are to catch up, and because you really don’t know who they will be at the next stages of their developmental journey. They may grow into someone perfectly compatible with you, or they may move in another direction altogether. Perhaps the most important questions we can ask about a partner relates to their emotional age: How emotionally mature are they? What areas have they developed and integrated? What aspects are still under-developed?  And how will their stage of development intersect with ours? Don’t be fooled by chronological age. Stage—not age—is what matters most.

I am no teacher

To teach you how to love,

For the fish need no teacher

To teach them to swim

And birds need no teacher

To teach them flight.

Swim on your own.

Fly on your own.

Love comes with no textbooks

And the greatest lovers in history were illiterate.

We must not give up. It takes so much time to heal because we are not just healing our own wounds- we are healing the world’s wounds, too. We think we are alone with our ‘stuff’, but we aren’t. With every clearing of our emotional debris, with every foray into a healthier way of being, with every excavation and release of old material, we heal the collective heart. So many of our familial and karmic ancestors had little opportunity to heal their pains. When we heal, their spirits breathe a sigh of relief. We heal them, too.

graceful surrender

Start close in,

don’t take the second step

or the third,

start with the first

thing

close in,

the step

you don’t want to take.
Start with

the ground

you know,

the pale ground

beneath your feet,

your own

way to begin

the conversation.
Start with your own

question,

give up on other

people’s questions,

don’t let them

smother something

simple.
To hear

another’s voice,

follow

your own voice,

wait until

that voice

becomes an

intimate

private ear

that can

then

really listen

to another.
Start right now

take a small step

you can call your own

don’t follow

someone else’s

heroics, be humble

and focused,

start close in,

don’t mistake

that other

for your own.
Start close in,

don’t take

the second step

or the third,

start with the first

thing

close in,

the step

you don’t want to take.

START CLOSE IN by David Whyte

Days of wine and focus

of hanging on

of staying strong

of keeping faith

of sitting still

of being silent

of standing in my own shoes

of letting go

of allowing the mystery

of hearing the call

of accepting what is

of not crossing borders or boundaries

of opening and opening

of trusting the journey

of seeing the face of God

of surrender into something bigger than I can know

of making the daily commitment

of acknowledging the grace

of thanking for everything

of looking for the miracles

of talking to trees

of taking time to prepare

of expressing my thanks

of helping in time of need

of following my own path

of obedience rather than sacrifice

of love and love and love

of all things love

again and again

This world doesn’t improve by demanding perfection. It improves when we reach through our armor and touch another with tenderness. It improves when we bust through the walls of our conditioning, and try a new way of being on for size. It improves when we work through our unresolved shadow and share what little light we can find. It is the small, positive steps that we take when we are at war with ourselves that change the world.

awe…

examination…

it keeps appearing

again…

I delete…

and again…

I delete…

and again

haven’t I already written this poem?

haven’t I already done that before?

What is left…

that I don’t know…

that I haven’t taken out…

haven’t examined properly?

There are always more layers

An onion…revealing more onion

layers…

upon layers…

illusions,

shadows,

truth left to excavate,

healing to be won,

motivations to uncover,

mystery to be discovered,

always more.

God keeps getting bigger

as I examine,

I reduce,

I open.

help me to stay in this mode of learning…

growth…

humble me…

soften me…

my best self emerges within this process

send it again…

them bones… them dry dry bones

Around 15 years ago now

I took a business trip

Somewhere in the middle of Florida

I was hostess for a community meeting

to talk about a new electrical line route and sub-station

proposed for this area

by the electric company I worked for at the time

I was with a team

We stayed in a local bed and breakfast

I had breakfast with a married couple

from somewhere west of Orlando,

can’t remember the town,

who were prophets of God.

Don’t ask me how I know,

I just do.

I was still learning to open to mystery

(my fundamental Baptist background

was being constantly challenged)

and I was early in my ‘testing’ to find out if God was really real,

I was early in my healing from the abuse,

shattering and loss I had gone through in the past years of my life.

Then, somehow, this couple and I were alone together –

the rest of the team out checking out the project route.

I ended up in their room.

I told them some of my story.

I sang for them.

They prayed over me,

anointed me with oil,

proclaimed and prophesied my future.

They wrote prophesy down on paper,

then burned it in the fireplace.

It was all a little weird and surreal,

more than a little scary,

and yet I knew they were sent there,

at that very place and time,

because God sent them there for me.

I do not know their names,

I never saw them again,

the business card they left me had a number which was not active –

Curiosity made me call that number a few weeks later.

Number not in service.

I never told anyone about this.

It was a very strange episode I kinda ignored.

I’ve never spoken, or written, about it since,

until now,

all these years later.

It keeps coming back to me lately,

since I recently spent an unexpected evening with

one of those project team members I was traveling with on that fateful trip.

I still don’t understand it,

but I am grateful,

I realize how far God’s grace has lead me

since the day of my unexpected, mysterious, anointing.

today’s study’s

Some people move through your life

like the perfume of peonies, heavy

and sensual and lingering.

Some people move through your life

like the sweet musky scent of cosmos

so delicate if you sniff twice, it’s gone.

Some people occupy your life

like moving men who cart off

couches, pianos and break dishes.

Some people touch you so lightly you

are not sure it happened. Others leave

you flat with footprints on your chest.

Some are like those fall warblers

you can’t tell from each other even

though you search Petersen’s.

Some come down hard on you like

a striking falcon and the scars remain

and you are forever wary of the sky.

We all are waiting rooms at bus

stations where hundreds have passed

through unnoticed and others

have almost burned us down

and others have left us clean and new

and others have just moved in.

The visible and the in- by Marge Piercy

my fellow exalted, beautiful beings,

full of grace,

as we touch and pass,

respectfully remember to forget:
surrender struggles to catch it’s breath,

then falls soft

as evening prayers at twilight,

gathering into the corners of our hearts

before falling full onto the center of our living circle,

free and happy as ‪Friday night‬.

next morning’s sun fills us,

each day, each season.

nurture moves with grace,

evolving slowly thru

our caring hands,

our grieving hearts,

our shared experience,

our acts of courage,

the healing salt of our tears.

with pieces of our true love,

we fly flags,

of prayer,

of peace,

of poems,

of our own making

to heal the worlds –

within us/

without us.

we allow –

simply complex.

we understand –

clearly unclear.

we stand and fill our world with the beauty

of sound,

of hum,

of voice,

of music,

protecting us

from lesser gods,

the terror all around.

love is the shield,

love is the answer,

love is the choice,

love is our glory,

our salvation,

crowning us

sons and daughters

of stars and starships.

at times,

in spite of our broken pieces,

shattered places,

our refusal to believe,

even our own darkened hearts.

astonishing,

isn’t it?

ok, now forget it all –

and practice tenderness.

open sesame

Yes
I stretch out

my arms
and bear

your cross
Your fear

that wells up and overflows
your sorrow

that haunts
the most awful pain

you endure
and you cause

I embrace
I gather into myself

with open arms
to swallow it

in love
I drown your No in my Yes

to a deeper Yes
The grave itself I smother

in love
until there is

nothing left
but Yes

and still
even later and always

my open arms

Unfolding Light

Hearts out searching our for home
that one place where we belong
it’s a cold dark night my baby
but I have seen the light
home is your arms
holding me tight

deeper and deeper into the beautiful
waking my heart to sing this song
fly with me as flames grow higher
passion flaming deep desire
touching us on this dark night

there is hope in this moment
there is hope in the sky
when days go dark and lonely baby
as long as stars are burning bright
there is hope
there is hope
they burn for you
oh baby
I burn for you

There are times when life goes hazy
that place we all fall down
life can be so hard my baby
will you hold the line tonight?
open up your heart and fight

there is hope in this moment
there is hope in the sky
when days go dark and lonely baby
as long as stars are burning bright
there is hope
there is hope
they burn for you
oh baby
I burn for you

we can do it together
love’s the place where dreams come true
we can do it together
I believe we can make it
through

put a little trust in it

Wendell Berry wrote, “Faith is not necessarily, or not soon, a resting place. Faith puts you out on a wide river in a boat, in the fog, in the dark.”

The things that haven’t been done before,

   Those are the things to try;

Columbus dreamed of an unknown shore

At the rim of the far-flung sky,

And his heart was bold and his faith was strong

As he ventured in dangers new,

And he paid no heed to the jeering throng

Or the fears of the doubting crew.
The many will follow the beaten track

   With guidepost on the way,

They live and have lived for ages back

With a chart for every day.

Someone has told them it’s safe to go

On the road he has traveled o’er,

And all that they ever strive to know

Are the things that were known before.
A few strike out, without map or chart,

Where never a man has been,

From the beaten paths they draw apart

To see what no man has seen,

There are deeds they hunger alone to do;

Though battered and bruised and sore,

They blaze the path for the many, who

   Do nothing not done before.
The things that haven’t been done before

   Are the tasks worth while to-day;

Are you one of the flock that follows, or

Are you one that shall lead the way?

Are you one of the timid souls that quail

At the jeers of a doubting crew,

Or dare you, whether you win or fail,

Strike out for a goal that’s new?

          ~ Edgar A. Guest

let’s do something new

me and you

let’s travel uncharted territory

make new maps of all we find
let’s create a new heaven

and a new earth

just by touching each other’s souls

tracing hearts around each other’s scars
let’s do something extraordinary

something spectacular

 something world changing

something wild
let’s create a brand new star

just by loving each other

so completely

it starts a supernova of epic proportion
let’s do something fun

something we can laugh at forever

something to bring joy into the room

peace into this broken world
