Why not grow roses in your soul?

Don’t try to invent them,
it’s been done.
Don’t labor over making them,
it will happen.

Ask what the Beloved is doing in you,
ask again and again,
slowly,
until you see.

Ask what you can do to help,
to clear the space,
to hold the light,
and that will be your path.

And promise that no matter
how disappointingly plain
or outrageously beautiful the results,
you will husband the fruits
of God’s work in you.

Even if you spend the whole year
simply wondering
it will be a splendid year.

As we awake to a new day, most of us think of the same old things. It’s a new day, so think of new things. New things to do, new ways to do them, new ways to make things interesting, new things to make life better, new ways to help your dreams come true. If you wake up every new day thinking of the same old things, then you set yourself up for the same old fall. – unknown

The only way to life is to accept each minute as an unrepeatable miracle, which it is exactly what it is –
a miracle and unrepeatable.
~Margaret Storm Jameson

As for me, I would see God, and to God would I commit my cause,
who does great things
and unsearchable, marvelous things without number.
Job 5:8-10

timing is everything

Midnight poem
6The clock has crossed the finish line
of yesterday
and begun a new day.
This very minute.
I begin this day in the darkness,
adjusting to the new date.
September is passing quickly
and I am ready for coming changes.
Filling time which has too many empty spaces,
I wait for new reinforcements
and for calls that are coming,
but haven’t yet.
Patience and practice makes perfect
timing is all about patience
I’m getting better at my virtues –
I’ve had a lot of practice.

the purpose of love is to create trust in good – Mary Baker Eddy

7
What if this is as good as it gets?
What if THIS very day is the best life will be?
What if this is what you are called to?
What if this moment is your purpose?
What can you do to find the joy in this moment?
How can you be happy and satisfied right now?
What are the miracles that are happening for you as you read this?
What joy-filled moment is hanging in the air above your head,
ready to splash all over you?
What gifts are being offered, if you will just receive them,
allow them to tumble all around you?
Maybe, just maybe, these questions hold the true secrets of life.
Maybe, living life in joy-fullness right now –
not waiting for some dream to come true –
Not holding back till your illusion of happiness materializes.
But, right now, sitting in whatever circumstance you are in,
no matter if it includes
pleasure or pain,
birth or death,
sorrow or joy,
broken hearts or full.
What if, this very given moment,
you look around and begin
finding the avalanche of jewel-blessings
surrounding you NOW.
Maybe this is the best, and only, secret.
Don’t wait for happy.
Don’t postpone your celebration.
Don’t wait to dance.
Laugh hard until your belly hurts today.
Cry hard until the salt heals your hurts.
The goodness of life is available now,
as well as, every minute
of this day,
Then when this day is done,
and you have enjoyed it’s vast array of gifts,
do the same tomorrow.

what about now?

I didn’t write a poem yesterday
The third day I have missed writing at least one poem,
for the past 8 months.
There were many moments I could have captured –
But I didn’t.
moments of grace,7
moments of failed attempts at grace,
moments of beauty,
moments of ordinary life,
in an ordinary day,
disgusting moments of clean up,
moments of peace watching the breeze sway the trees,
moments of aggravation trying to feed an old dog pills,
unexpected treasures of a cool wind at noon in July,
and unexpected hardships walking from the grocery store overloaded with bags.
There were lovely moments of frosting cupcakes with fresh buttercream,
moments of friendship, shared laughter and food,
hard moments of garbled, angry speech,
blissful moments of holding new baby, Eli –
that was definitely a poetic moment!
There were painful moments of looking at a very ill face,
winning moments as the Mets beat the Braves.
all these moments,
and so many more
each a gift I received,
each a story to be shared with humanity.
Such are the moments of our lives,
our stories to scribe on our hearts and on paper.
So many miracles to notice,
to acknowledge,
to record.
So many ways to write a poem –
and I chose none of them

kindness matters

Kind hearts are the gardens,
Kind thoughts are the roots,
Kind words are the flowers,
Kind deeds are the fruits.
Unknown

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another,
as God in Christ forgave you.
Ephesians 4:32

timing is all about patience

20130326-101218.jpg

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
Ephesians 6:13

Can you wait for the mud to settle?
Challenging words from Lao Tzu
Can you wait?
Having done all you can,
can you simply stand?
Waiting for the timing that is not your own.
Waiting for THE way,
not just A way,
not just my way.
Patience is a virtue.
Virtues are HARD!
All I can do is
keep letting go
over and over
with shaky hands and heart
into the bigger mystery
into the arms of love and intimacy
into the uncertainty of faith
into the rest of sure promise
Having done all I can by grace alone
now I stand,
and ask for the grace
to wait for You.
Not my will,
Thine be done.

A Lifetime A Day

In the space between breaths.
The silence between two notes.
It can be gone –
A month’s worth of words
erased with a fingertip.
Gone for
forever.

A 12, 30 even 63 year marriage over
With 4 simple words spoken:
I want a divorce.

A home with all its possessions
destroyed in a matter of minutes
in the fury of nature –
Fire,
storm,
   or selfishness

Life!
so fragile,
with no guarantees
of longevity
or comfort,
begs to be lived
now.
In the middle of it all,
the song must be sung
or forever silenced.

Living a lifetime a day
is the only way1a
to count
for the sake of goodness.

This moment
is the only moment that counts.
The thing eternal
are these moments
that don’t wait.

Take a deep, deep breath
of the spirit that is giving it all.
Breathe your thank you’s
in and out.
Slowly.
Wholly.
Holy.
Allow this new air change the world,
to light up the inner rooms of darkness,
for the only gift that matters,
the only thing that remains.

All else can be destroyed.
When nothing else remains,
what is this eternal gift?

Love, and love alone
is why we exist.

for love of leaves

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leave subsides to leaf .
So Eden sank to grief, …

So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
– Robert Frost
Once again, more beautiful words and thoughts from Ann Voskamp –

All summer, the chlorophyll of the leaf, all that green, absorbs the sun and releases food and it this cycle of chlorophyll that cloaks the leaves’ pure colors.

Shalom kneels under the pear tree, picks herself a yellow leaf, gold for a pocket.

I finger the edge of a scarlet one.

“But come the fall of the year, come November —  the chlorophyll ebbs. And the green dims.”

Shalom holds up an ember leaf.

“And there it is — the leaf’s true colors!”

Shalom whispers, bowed over her gilded leaf — “You mean this leaf was always this colour?”

And I nod.

All this brilliance, all this God glory — it is always here.

But life can blind and truth can hide in plain sight and the ways of God burn underneath everything.

Life has blinding cycles of its own — but our God is always blazing glory.

And when you whisper thanks to God — you glimpse the glory of God and pure grace colors your world.

And I pick up a pen to thank through the fall days.

And the dark ebbs and the shadows dim –

and all the trees and the thankful ignite with the true colours of the glorious now.
