seeing eternity

Let these be your desires: To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love; And to bleed willingly and joyfully. To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving; To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy; To return home at eventide with gratitude; And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

    – Kahlil Gibran

My language the size of a seed, small and frozen for a winters night…the sweet drain of being married to the fire side heat and slippers …

Honey drenched while walking towards the woods …

tender landscape of icicles frozen on glass…

a mirror wiped dry of reflection…

something pierced deep in the breast while creating less, and easing into body’s rhythm

the howl of the moon, the darkness too bright…

devoured by love…

seeking water but kept thirsty…

fabulous root in the deep of my core…a sigh left for longing…

things,
the daily trivia,
the daily frustrations,
fall away.
It is all a matter of getting to the center of the beam.

when will it get better?

The expense of spirit in a waste of shame
Is lust in action: and till action, lust

Is perjured, murderous, bloody, full of blame,

Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust;

Enjoyed no sooner but despised straight;

Past reason hunted; and no sooner had,

Past reason hated, as a swallowed bait,

On purpose laid to make the taker mad.

Mad in pursuit and in possession so;

Had, having, and in quest to have extreme;

A bliss in proof, and proved, a very woe;

Before, a joy proposed; behind a dream.

All this the world well knows; yet none knows well

To shun the heaven that leads men to this hell.

I believe it is no ones intention to live as a perpetual victim.
No one ever said they wanted that as a career,

wanted to spend their valuable life having no personal power –

yet how many are there

trapped by the belief that life,

God,

some ‘other’

has taken something from them

which they should have?

they deserve(d) it

they didn’t want to lose what’s gone

      (I understand that)

but now it’s gone

and they’ve been wronged

they spin in the agony of not controlling

someone,

deity,

something, anything

else.
They can’t see what they’re doing,

they can’t hear what they’re saying,

they can’t see how they’re living,

because they are sure

sure they are right,

sure they deserve to be this grand victim,

sure the very best of life,

their very happiest,

is behind them now.

They may say ‘they are not special’,

but in reality they believe they are SO special

life should only, always, give them what they want…

no matter what.
I used to try to convince them otherwise,

spend massive energy,

years invested in living with people determined not to see,

not to let go,

not to find happiness and peace.

People refusing to do the work to gain truth and freedom.

now I take it case by case,

I trust God enough to allow them to come,

allow them to go.

I do my own hard work

of letting go

of letting go

of letting go…

of loving with no expectations of return…

of finding out new insights about my own heart…

of standing in my own healing,

sight,

strength,

without being distracted by the manipulation

of people living as victims.

I remind myself (over and over) everyone has a right to live as they choose,

truth is never an argument to be won.

Then I give thanks that I chose something new for myself.

I pray for each person in the world to live with peace and joy…

I grieve my own, very personal losses,

and, eventually,

life goes on…

Amidst ten thousand losses and swirling joys.

At this very instant on the sacred Earth I wait.

Come to us Beauty, Wisdom, Goodness, Peace, Solace, Grace, Counsel, Love.

See the open archway this cold night

Air, rich as gold flows.

Fine snow, glistens our faces. Each flake,

every exquisite crystal blossom is the covenant of your love

told a thousand, thousand times.

the very most grand adventurous  perspectives

But for my hand, as unattempted yet,

Like a poor beggar, raileth on the rich.

Well, whiles I am a beggar, I will rail

And say there is no sin but to be rich;

And being rich, my virtue then shall be

To say there is no vice but beggary.

Since kings break faith upon commodity,

Gain, be my lord, for I will worship thee.

        – Philip the Bastard from “King John” (2.1.592)

People don’t like love, they like that flittery flirty feeling. They don’t love love – love is sacrificial, love is ferocious, it’s not emotive. Our culture doesn’t love love, it loves the idea of love. It wants the emotion without paying anything for it.

 time wears down

as life takes its anguished toll

of strained shoulders and weary back

from the unyielding pressure of anger’s mighty weight

lash of black eyed look,

the demon,

lying in wait,

blame unleashed

words stripping tender heart skin

of the vulnerable

innocence unprepared for attack

leaving hope in shreds,

shame cocks its hat sideways

flames of passion freeze in place

ice, brittle, cutting

fills veins,

painful,

slicing to ribbons

destroying all goodness in its path

wounds with nothing to hide

nowhere to hide

Only you can change this –

you CAN change this!

I know for sure…

you can…

if you choose to…

God only knows

if you will

create new pathways

And here’s what made it happen…
They tell me –

Not to…

Don’t…

Forget the writer,

leave her be,

Focus on some other things,

words need not be free
They say no need to share adventures..

Stuff the stories,

hide your truths

Don’t capture the experience, it’s really of no use

They say

other things need my attention, my energy,
For God’s sake, earn a wage –
I’ll tell you what that does for me –

…finally, finally…finally –

sends me to the page
And all the walls and stops crash-tumble-trickle down
I sit furious-

typing –

damn punctuation, tense, pronoun
Does it really matter if they she he we agree?

It’s time to tell my story – for once, for now – for ME

And then there comes a moment

when all you have suffered

all you have learned

all you have lost and found

rise up and become

and suddenly you are

here

you are

who you dreamed of being

so many years ago

suddenly you have arrived

at what you caught glimpses of

for so many years

and the search,

the free fall of broken dreams,

broken hearts

broken everything

tumbling down rabbit holes

stumbling over the feet

of your own lack of knowledge

is over

you find yourself on solid ground

stable

steady

raising your Ebenezer

those tributes to God

for all the mighty stones of help

building this foundation on the solid rocks

you know so well

and though the pilgrimage may continue

though the journey is definitely not over

though life is fragile

and security an illusion

there is a new sureness to your step

a trusting unshakable

a calm in it all

a new assurance of provision

a new traveling song to be sung as you walk forward

always forward

always pilgrim ready for new adventures

forgetting the names of what lay behind

you press on to your calling

the prize set before

reveling in the mercies ever new

for each new day

there is no stopping now

you have found something

which cannot ever be taken

you have arrived here by your own determination

reached a place

both spiritual and physical

a place of such magnitude

the light shines from every angle

it has sealed up the oldest sores

bound up the deepest wounds

satisfied the deepest longings

changed everything

settled old scores with finality

no longer will you settle for less than you deserve

no more will you tolerate anything less than your best and highest offerings

you must be all you can be

gratitude fills you for this place

a place so lovely

it can bear up

even under the weight

of our hearts wildest desires

with just this simple name

it resounds inside our souls like a bell –

home

yes, beloved,

you are home.

right where you belong.

  Respectfully given,

exalted being

full of grace,

remember to forget:

surrender struggles to catch it’s breath,

then falls soft

as evening prayers at twilight,

gathering into the corners of our hearts

before falling full

onto the center of our living circle,

free and happy as a Friday night.

next morning’s sun fills us,

each day, each season.

nurture moves with grace,

evolving slowly thru

our caring hands,

our grieving hearts,

our shared experience,

our acts of courage,

the healing salt of our tears,

the energy generation of our joy.

with pieces of our true love,

we fly flags,

of prayer,

of peace,

of poems,

of our own making

to heal the worlds –

within us/

without us.

we allow –

simply complex.

we understand –

clearly unclear.

we stand and fill our world with

the beauty,

the mystery,

of sound,

of hum,

of laughter,

of voice,

of music,

protecting us

from lesser gods,

the terror all around.

love is the shield,

love is the answer,

love is the choice,

love is our glory,

our salvation,

crowning us

sons and daughters

of the King.

at times,

in spite of our broken pieces,

our refusal to believe,

even our darkened hearts.

astonishing,

isn’t it?

AL

A sob in the night

awakens us from dreams,
a crack opens in the wall

and in seeps the dark stream
with pieces of broken things in it,

and blood, and our own ragged edge,
and in seeps the light,

and the voice singing.
We want to pull the wall around us,

the sorrow pouring in,
but it is breached now,

it is only an illusion,
and we are out in the dangerous light,

the fragile street,
tender as everyone else,

ready to duck, ready to weep.
We are all refugees now,

foreigners, except to foreigners.
It’s the egg that is cracked,

the stone rolled away.
If there is a place for love,

for your own brave soul, this is it.
The cord in another’s heart

knotted in yours,
the hand reaching for you

you can reach out to.
Terror and the stillness,

and the voice singing.

and for each person in this world 🙏🏻

when you’re ready

 Again I resume the long
lesson: how small a thing

can be pleasing, how little

in this hard world it takes

to satisfy the mind

and bring it to its rest.
With the ongoing havoc

the woods this morning is

almost unnaturally still.

Through stalled air, unshadowed

light, a few leaves fall

of their own weight.
                  The sky

is gray. It begins in mist

almost at the ground

and rises forever. The trees

rise in silence almost

natural, but not quite,

almost eternal, but

not quite.
        What more did I

think I wanted? Here is

what has always been.

Here is what will always

be. Even in me,

the Maker of all this

returns in rest, even

to the slightest of His works,

a yellow leaf slowly

falling, and is pleased.

💜

Sabbaths 1999, VII by  Wendell Berry

 The sky in my rearview

is a huge bowl of rainbow sherbet

the beautiful kind

with raspberry, orange-n-lime

swatches of lemon, indigo and periwinkle

float like barges –

in, out

around.

Framing.

Dancing.

Living.

At one point tangerine fills the top of the hilly crest

and head light stars

blaze brilliant against the backdrop

indigo stretched above framing the masterpiece.

At times I find it hard to keep moving forward

into the matte gray of the sky just ahead.

so much loveliness is going on

right behind me

how can I keep heading away from it?

How can I not be a part of this splendor?

Eventually midnight blue seizes its moment of glory,

then night falls over all

and I am left

aching with the beauty,

the majesty,

the extravagant display,

of this wonderful world.

I go to wondering

if this longing for your kiss

will ever be answered?

if my whole life I will wait

for a moment which has already passed,

never to be again under this piece of sky.

always a whisper.

The magic of love,

a thing with wings

hovering over my heart

for years

echoing on into eternity.

 Drinking from an Empty Glass:
A Letter to a Dear, Dark Friend
Yes, I know the government is corrupt. Yes, I know

there are people conspiring. Yes, I know people can

lack integrity. Yes, I know that western culture is materialistic.

Yes, I know that corporations are self-serving.

Yes, I know that the media is manipulative. Yes, I know

it is hard to trust love. Yes, I know that it can be difficult

to believe in God. I share many of your concerns.
And I also know that we cannot change the world

without acknowledging what is wrong. I know that we

must stand against that which shames, oppresses and

damages humanity. I know that we should not ignore

the injustices and put on a fake smile. I know that we

must find our voice and stand our ground. I know that

we must fight for our right to the light. I believe deeply

in forward moving criticism.
But something doesn’t feel quite right. You complain

all the time. You have made negativity a full time

job. You don’t make an effort to find solutions. You

blame everything on the world out there. You don’t actually

do anything positive to effect change. And you

seldom acknowledge the positive steps humanity has

made. You seldom acknowledge the beauty around

you. You almost never see the light in the darkness.
I know something from my lived experience. I

know that the light is always there. It is there, in the

breath that keeps you alive, in the smile of a child, in

the yet another chance to find your path. It is there in

the rise of the feminine, in the therapeutic revolution,

in the burgeoning quest for authenticity. If you can’t see

it, then the issue is a personal one, for there are signs of

progress everywhere.
And I also know from a lifetime of overcoming that

it is possible to hold it all at once. To fight against injustice

while still embodying the light. To see where we

are lacking, while rejoicing in our abundance. To express

our anger, and to live our gratitude. To feel overwhelmed

by an unfair world, while still achieving our goals. To see how

far we have yet to travel, while applauding how far we have come.
And so I wonder what lives below your perpetual

negativity? Apart from the problems with the world,

what happened that darkened your lens? What made

the glass so empty? Is it really all about the world ‘out

there’, or are there also unresolved personal experiences

that need to be healed? What are you really trying to express

about the lack of love, attention, and satisfaction

in your life? What lives below this victimhood? What is

your deeper complaint? What needs to expressed and

resolved so that you will see some light shining through

again? Please don’t wait until the world is perfect, for it

will never be so.
Dear friend, how can I help you to believe again?

👀

(~Jeff Brown an excerpt from ‘Love it Forward’)

In every moment we make a decision — whether conscious or unconscious. Will I choose to open my heart, send love, withhold judgment and thus free myself from fear? Or will I close my heart, project fear instead of extending love, judge others, and thus bind myself to fear? The choice is mine and mine alone.
— Marianne Williamson

Like a tree our growth depends upon our ability to soften, loosen, and shed boundaries and defenses we no longer need.

🌳

Trees grow up through their branches and down through their roots into the earth. They also grow wider with each passing year. As they do, they shed the bark that served to protect them but now is no longer big enough to contain them. In the same way, we create boundaries and develop defenses to protect ourselves and then, at a certain point, we outgrow them. If we don’t allow ourselves to shed our protective layer, we can’t expand to our full potential.
Trees need their protective bark to enable the delicate process of growth and renewal to unfold without threat. Likewise, we need our boundaries and defenses so that the more vulnerable parts of ourselves can safely heal and unfold. But our growth also depends upon our ability to soften, loosen, and shed boundaries and defenses we no longer need. It is often the case in life that structures we put in place to help us grow eventually become constricting.
Unlike a tree, we must consciously decide when it’s time to shed our bark and expand our boundaries, so we can move into our next ring of growth. Many spiritual teachers have suggested that our egos don’t disappear so much as they become large enough to hold more than just our small sense of self—the boundary of self widens to contain people and beings other than just “me.” Each time we shed a layer of defensiveness or ease up on a boundary that we no longer need, we metaphorically become bigger people. With this in mind, it is important that we take time to question our boundaries and defenses. While it is essential to set and honor the protective barriers we have put in place, it is equally important that we soften and release them when the time comes. In doing so, we create the space for our next phase of growth.

so inviting

AWAKEN TO THE INVITATION

As the density of night gives way to the bright song of the dawn, so your soul continually coaxes you to give way to the light and awaken. Longing is the voice of your soul, it constantly calls you to be fully present in your life: to live to the full the one life given to you. Rilke said to the young poet, “Live everything.” You are here on earth now, yet you forget so easily. You traveled a great distance to get here. The dream of your life has been dreamed from eternity. You belong within a great embrace that urges you to have the courage to honor the immensity that sleeps in your heart. When you learn to listen to and trust the wisdom of your soul’s longing, you will awaken to the invitation of graced belonging that inhabits the generous depths of your destiny. You will become aware of the miracle of presence within and around you.
