 Above the mountains
the geese turn into

the light again
painting their

black silhouettes

on an open sky.
Sometimes everything

has to be

enscribed across

the heavens
so you can find

the one line

already written

inside you.
Sometimes it takes

a great sky

to find that
first, bright

and indescribable

wedge of freedom

in your own heart.
Sometimes with

the bones of the black

sticks left when the fire

has gone out
someone has written

something new

in the ashes

of your life.
You are not leaving.

Even as the light

fades quickly now,

you are arriving.

perhaps

 We talk about balance…
as if…

we can actually achieve such a thing

in this,

the odd numbered trinity-teeter-tottered

kaleidoscope of a heart, soul and mind

living within the human pie crust

we name skin!
It is our work

our great career –

to keep opening to the liquid mystery

of living in this very moment.

Free will choice,

our supreme gift –

our supreme curse.
Oh, yes,

we want things fixed.

We want to know,

to define truth,

to arrive and settle,

to judge others through our personal lens,

to be right, of course.
How do we live with the reality of ‘seeing in part’,

through a ‘dark veil’,

with just glimpses of the light in the night sky,

we fish in the darkness,

trying to catch one small piece of a star at a time,

just to have it burn out,

leaving us to go back and try again?
This is the life of the seekers,

the mystics,

the warriors,

who have been seized with the firm belief –

that life matters.

That love is the way to healing.

That there is always more of God to be had.

The mystery gets bigger with each illumination.

The balance comes from allowing it all.

Good. Bad.

Joy. Sorrow.

Sickness. Pain.

Poverty. Wealth.

Even the broken path,

the truth and the lies,

have eternal divine purpose.

Our task to

learn,

open,

love,

trust,

forgive,

heal,

move,

sing,

dance,

create,

keep letting go,

keep changing,

be present,

through it all.
We dream the large dreams of living into our best selves.

We focus intently on each small task before us.

We think,

We listen,

We give,

We receive.

We speak, when necessary.

We walk daily in vigilance.

Letting the legacy of each day stand on it’s own.

We live knowing our next choice is always our most important….

and so it goes

and so it goes

Sometimes you have to leave

what you think you know

behind.

No one ever really wants to do this.

Knowing things

can be very comforting.

All day, soul whispers

what I need to know.

I don’t hear her

until I lay aside

cherished beliefs and assumptions

until I dare to be with the not-knowing.

And then. . . .

Well, that’s the risky part, isn’t it?

There is no telling

what living an ensouled life

might ask of us.
~Oriah “Mountain Dreamer” House
So this is where I am in writing the book, “The Choice,” -on the great plain of not knowing, offering myself- pen in hand- anyway. Each day, the darkness yields to the light, and words hit the page, surprising me. This is what it’s like: the light coming again and again, the darkness making the illumination breath-taking.

ready? clean. close. begin.

 CLOSING 2015
One always has to know when a stage comes to an end. If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through.

Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters – whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished.
Did you lose your job? Has a loving relationship come to an end? Did you leave your parents’ house? Gone to live abroad? Has a long-lasting friendship ended all of a sudden?

You can spend a long time wondering why this has happened.
You can tell yourself you won’t take another step until you find out why certain things that were so important and so solid in your life have turned into dust, just like that.

But such an attitude will be awfully stressing for everyone involved: your parents, your husband or wife, your friends, your children, your sister.

Everyone is finishing chapters, turning over new leaves, getting on with life, and they will all feel bad seeing you at a standstill.
Things pass, and the best we can do is to let them really go away.
That is why it is so important (however painful it may be!) to destroy souvenirs, move, give lots of things away to orphanages, sell or donate the books you have at home.
Everything in this visible world is a manifestation of the invisible world, of what is going on in our hearts – and getting rid of certain memories also means making some room for other memories to take their place.

Let things go. Release them. Detach yourself from them.
Nobody plays this life with marked cards, so sometimes we win and sometimes we lose.

Do not expect anything in return, do not expect your efforts to be appreciated, your genius to be discovered, your love to be understood.
Stop turning on your emotional television to watch the same program over and over again, the one that shows how much you suffered from a certain loss: that is only poisoning you, nothing else.
Nothing is more dangerous than not accepting love relationships that are broken off, work that is promised but there is no starting date, decisions that are always put off waiting for the “ideal moment.”
Before a new chapter is begun, the old one has to be finished: tell yourself that what has passed will never come back.

Remember that there was a time when you could live without that thing or that person – nothing is irreplaceable, a habit is not a need.

This may sound so obvious, it may even be difficult, but it is very important.
Closing cycles. Not because of pride, incapacity or arrogance, but simply because that no longer fits your life.
Shut the door, change the record, clean the house, shake off the dust.
Stop being who you were, and change into who you are.

  the path keeps winding
I keep walking

always into surprises

always into adventures

today an unexpected ‘wow’ on the path

love always wins

grace always changes us

I keep seeing it

as I practice this truth named love

as I let go into the the flow

as I clear out the old

leave

return

let go

keep letting go

making space for now

the work of living in now

this freedom thing is a worthwhile challenge

this mystery just keeps expanding

this love thing is truly

the only thing

that could possibly

change this world….

or anyone…

mainly..

namely.

someone

like

me.

begin again

trust the new beginning.

I wish you love 🎄❤️🕯🎄

So very thankful! 💞

each piece

I am struck by the otherness of things rather than their sameness.

The way a tiny pile of snow perches in the crook of a branch in the

tall pine, away by itself, high enough not to be noticed by people,

out of reach of stray dogs. It leans against the scaly pine bark, busy

at some existence that does not need me.
It is the differences of objects that I love, that lift me toward the rest

of the universe, that amaze me. That each thing on earth has its own

soul, its own life, that each tree, each clod is filled with the mud of

its own star. I watch where I step and see that the fallen leaf, old

broken grass, an icy stone are placed in exactly the right spot on the

earth, carefully, royalty in their own country

O come thou Mystery,

unseen, unbidden, unfelt,

but so madly needed here.
Come to us

who push you away with our despair,

snare us with wonder.
Come to us, the lonely and broken,

O Small One,

not to solve but to be with.
Come to us who grieve

place or worth or hope,

and find it with us.
Come to us in our smugness

and lay yourself down in the manger

of our secret wounds.
Come to us in our privilege

and let us hang our lives

on a poor little peasant child.
Come to us in our violent fear

and calm us with your tiny voice.

Ask us to love you.
For us who find it hard to love each other,

come and gather us in a circle,

have us care, have us sing.
Come to us, too afraid to need,

be fragile among us,

and let us fall in love.
Neglect our neglect, Emmanuel,

come and be a tiny flame of love among us,

and light our own.

gift

 Longest night.

Darkness falls like snow,

falls and falls,

deepening.

Older than the universe,

here before it,

and will be after.

Wraps an arm around us

as if we’re old friends.

We are.

Darkness lives in us,

radiates from us.

We speak it.

Darkness is the velvet cloth

where you cherish the gem

of your presence among us,

darkness the womb,

darkness the manger

that cradles your light,

this holy being

that becomes us,

births us.

In the darkness

you do not come to us,

we come from you.

Because you are with and not apart,

even the darkness

is you.

Because you shine in it

the dark is our dark,

none of it unchanged.

Your being our light,

your hereness our life,

shining in the longest night.

To go into the darkness with a light
is to know the light.

To know the dark, go dark.

Go without light and find that the dark too, blooms and sings

and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings.

– Wendell Berry

Black. out. black.

Black. on. black.

Dark. on dark. on dark.

I was simply looking for home.

Not knowing the current alley would lead

to where the sidewalk ended

I stepped off the edge

out of the world of light

waking into morning night

a banished sun

no stars

or moon

or streetlights

or fireflies

or lighters

in pitch darkness

I lay, unable to move,

senses adjusting

to what is my new reality

hearing the life

that lives here

wondering if I’ll make friends

while I’m here

learning this new space.

finding center

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.

 The simplest things in life

Are the most extraordinary

Let them reveal themselves.

– Paulo Coelho

🌲

There is magic in every little thing.

Your very breath is magic

You, showing up on this tiny planet,

at this very time in history.

The way the sun glints off your hair.

The way the trees recognize you.

The way a child can turn their head

and plunge you into grief.

it’s all about perspective.

Einstein reminds us

We have a choice in how we live.

One of two ways –

As if nothing –

OR

As if everything –

Is miraculous.

I’m so glad I choose to see the enchanted pathway.

It’s always a fine day here.

No matter what circumstance I find myself in.

Magic abounds.

 In the sixth month already

of the impossible

Gabriel,

so usually unseeable—

startling,

though you thought him so foreign,

how nearer than you

to the seed of your life—

fills the room with his wings,

wraps with his words

this world

beside God’s so small,

sets it in the greater one

among stars

and you

lit by the same light,

and calls forth your trust in heaven’s actual,
—

for with God nothing is impossible—

the divine within,

inviting your invitation

from even deeper in,

a Word,

a world entrusted to you,

your being

that by gift and labor blesses,

brought with singing

through the portal of this blood of birth

and that crucial other,

calling to life

in your drab littleness

the body of your holiness,

the flesh that God without you cannot have.

Even God waits

to see the miracle,

the birth that only you can birth.

There is no test for paradise,

only paradise.

Say yes.

addictions of poetry

Slowly coming to acknowledge out loud that poetry is everything to me. I cannot live without it the way that others need love or religion or purpose or cause. Nothing, except the softness of the body, ignites me more. Nothing fills, feeds or illuminates me like this. To find a new poet is like being returned to an old love. To discover a lover of poetry is like being returned to someone from my original tribe. Completely thrilled this morning to be lying in my bed silently reading Nariyyah Waheed. Thrilled. Here are a few sweet lines. https://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/7145613.Nayyirah_Waheed
   – Jen Lemen

I read poetry

And it’s so familiar

I like this way of words.

I slip into the passion,

the broken hearts,

so like my own.

The depth of loving,

it is my own.

The beauty,

these words caught inside

someplace within myself,

suddenly breaking free from this other angle.

Broken love,

twisting in the wind of unequal relationships.

The parables,

the simple narrative,

the stark condensed truth,

the healing,

the beauty of nature, home, love, life, laughter…

Anything can become a poem.

Words strung,

so like my own way,

yet not,

new,

fresh,

sometimes not quite understandable, yet.

I am in love with poems.

I learn from their awareness

I may get tired of my own heart wringing words,

I may get bored with my own platitudes,

but, everyday,

I find the words in poems of another

to inspire me,

to allow me to see,

to teach me,

to make me laugh,

to get me through my day.

Everyday I realize how much poetry means to me

I am so blessed to be a small part of this magic.

I love poems.

I need poems.

I am a poet.

That settles in a good spot within me,

as I settle in,

with the perfect shade of coffee,

to read my morning dose.

Wo)Men with courage do not always slay dragons, sometimes they ride them…

Furthermore, we have not even to risk the adventure alone; for the heroes of all time have gone before us; the labyrinth is thoroughly known; we have only to follow the thread of the hero-path. And where we would had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves; where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence; where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.
   – Joseph Campbell

Security is a funny thing. We long for it, but it is all too often an illusion, one that covers over our authentic path, one we pay the ultimate price for. Security is a sick-cure for what ails us on the deepest levels. What we really long for is a life that is infused with purpose and connection. I know many people who promised themselves that they would live their ‘real-life’ after retiring from the quest for security. When they arrived ‘there’, they were either entirely exhausted from decades of falsity, or they had forgotten the ‘real-life’ that called them. This is what happens when we bury our precious life below mountains of obligation and distraction. We can’t get out from under them. We are only here for the blink of an eye. Better to substitute the illusion of sick-cure-ity for something authentic and alive. Better to find safety in the heart of a life deeply lived. Better to live true.
      – Jeff Brown

On this day of your life I believe God wants you to know…

…that safety is not the thing you should look for in the

future. Joy is what you should look for.
Security and joy may not come in the same package.

They can…but they also cannot.

There is no guarantee.

If your primary concern is a guarantee of security,

you may never experience the truest joys of life.

This is not a suggestion that you become reckless,

but it is an invitation to at least become daring.

  – Neale Donald Walsh

TRUST THE PROMISE
Then the delight, when your courage kindled,

And out you stepped onto new ground,

Your eyes young again with energy and dream,

A path of plenitude opening before you.
Though your destination is not yet clear

 You can trust the promise of this opening;

Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning

That is at one with your life’s desire.
Awaken your spirit to adventure;

 Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;

Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,

For your soul senses the world that awaits you.

   – John O’Donohue
