look at the stars. how they shine for you.

Strange to realize
on our very worst day of life
someone else is having their very best.
Every death
is countered with birth.
Every grieving tear
with belly laughter.
Our weakest moments
are also our strongest.
Our greatest challenge of faith or doubt
is when true faith is finally began.
The deepest mysteries come clear
as we accept what we don’t know.
On the night we see the stars fall
the sun is rising on the other side of the world.
The human spirit cannot be conquered
we rise from ashes again with each burning.
Tides come in
as tides go out.
With every broken heart
there is an answering new moment of love.
For every first kiss
a final slamming of the door –
figuratively or literally.
For every threshold we cross
we must cross again in a new moment.
We each have moments of glory
moments of defeat.
Worry is the paper tiger
which strips our moments of joy.
Illusions of control hide behind our eyes
always revealed to be a waste of our precious resources.
There is a time for every season.
In all we are to bring the sacrifice of praise.
It is the amazing hat-trick to the healing of our wounds
that in every single circumstance
we stand in the truth of that moment
and we give thanks.

seasons

Walking among trees being stripped,136040026385c5a03b2b2e432c34f77e
the graveyard of colors at my feet,

branches above slowly being robbed,
air chilling, reaching farther into me,

I can’t shake the gentle dread
that something more will be required,

something taken, or outgrown,
requiring a reckoning of grief,

no loss God wants to save me from,
no turning that I want to miss,

a coming free that will not feel like such,
a birth resembling autumn’s lovely death.

I know no other passage through these woods.
0ece9c124b074afeb94168e1d0a3bae2The small path reaches out to me.

I feel my breathing, steady, slow and small.
The forest turns around me as I go.

Mist rises from the farm field to the west,
that slowly fills with yellow morning light.

empty

Today I found myself empty10d841c56404f73147d2cde96dffe05e
Empty of words
Empty of color
Empty of strength
Empty of empathy
Empty of ability
Empty of defenses
Empty of thoughts even.
I’ve been here many times over the years,
I understand it better now.
I rested a lot.
Did minimal work,
other than cleaning up diarrhea
and fixing meals,
I mainly stayed in bed
stayed in open, wordless, prayer –
Allowing the emptiness to be.
For five months now,
I have been giving my life force
to others, to keep them alive.
I have earned this emptiness.
I must allow myself to recharge.
I have nothing more to give  at this moment.
The filling up of the emptiness
must be done carefully
and in prayer.
Tomorrow is another day.
Baby steps.

curiosity

One day, many years ago,
I realized how little I knew
about life
about the world
about God
about love
about relationships
2about nature
about cultures
about people
about learning
about how things work
about myself
about pretty much everything.
Yes, one day the full impact hit me
of how small my understanding
really is,
and it changed my life.
I became aware.
I became aware that I could choose,
even though no one gave me permission.
It hit me – that all the people,
who had told me they had the complete truth,
and so I should just believe them,
couldn’t possibly ALL be right.
I also realized, very importantly, most of them were not people I wanted my life to emulate.
So, maybe, living wasn’t about being right, or perfect.
Maybe life was about being open, learning about each other,
about helping each other.
Maybe love really was about unconditional,
whatever that truly meant.
Maybe life was about trying…
anything…everything
that I found intriguing,
or felt my soul drawn to.
And so I opened myself to this new way
of thinking,
of being,
of seeing.
I became curious.
I became open.
I became dogmatic –
about NOT being dogmatic.
I removed the words,
‘I’m right’ and ‘I can’t’ and ‘impossible’ from my vocabulary.
I fought my automatic judgments….
still one of my biggest daily battles….
I keep making that choice.
I fought to improve only myself,
to forgive myself,
to keep learning the hard way,
it is my choice.
I sought to tell, and live, my ever-evolving truth,
holding that truth lightly in open, adoring hands,
always allowing myself to be wrong without shame,
allowing for changes without despising the learning,
I am ever-so-happy when I make that choice!
I battled to take responsibility
for my thoughts and actions,
Always adjusting, making new choices.
Staying aware.
Being honest.
Making lots of mistakes,
Life is very messy at times.
I’ve lost a lot.
I’ve gained more than I lost.

At some point, along the way,
I became convinced, at least for me,
this was the only way to truly live.
The mystery keeps getting bigger.
I continue to do war with my desire to shut down my heart,
in the face of constant hurts and disappointments.
I keep letting go.
Opening, always opening.
Each step has become a miracle moment. 1
Each opening leads me to open more.
I have come to see everything is grace.
I have come to understand the extreme value,
of each human soul,
of being vulnerable,
of being human,
of just being.
I have made the commitment to the path of curiosity,
not because I will ever learn it all,
but because I won’t.
Yet, I am aware, that there is infinite learning at my fingertips,
and I want as much as I can get,
to go as high as I can go,
to know as much
of God,
and Mystery,
and life itself,
as I am able.
One day, not very long ago, I found the words of poet, Mary Oliver.
She gives these brilliant life instructions,
pay attention.
be astonished.
tell about it.
Yes, that has been my path.
As Einstein said,
I have no special talents –
I’m just passionately curious.
I add to that:
I have completely fallen in love with life!
I’ve grown fabulously addicted to seeing the holy miracles all around me.
I am so blessed, so full, so grateful!
I can’t help wanting to share
the path of this glorious adventure,
with others who love it too –
and so,
though I’ve been accused of talking too much,
more than a few times, in my life,
I’ll just keep on…
because, I’ve found,
all voices are beautiful –
in their own way.

four months as a caregiver

I had fainted,
unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait on the Lord : be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart:
wait, I say, on the Lord.
– Psalms 27:13, 14
photo
I’m not sure if I am standing
I feel faint and dizzy
the room spins,
as the world tilts,
as death hangs out in the dining room
shuffling papers on the table,
the word
contagious
sits in the air heavy,
smelling like the nightly skunk visits in the yard.
This mother and son hang out in beds
as I witness their daily fading.
The land of the living feels very far away.
I want to run.
I want to seek fun –
people and activities.
I want to walk in sunshine and breathe fresh air.
How can I have courage at a time like this?
How can I wait?
How can I wait for God?
How can I know the strength will come?
How can I know this will turn out for good?
How can I trust, what I cannot do on my own,
I can do through waiting,
getting myself out of the way,
so my mighty God can do it for me?
I have seen many things of God before now.
I have seen countless miracles.
My God has been faithful.
I have never been abandoned.
I am sure of God’s goodness.
I know Love beyond measure.
There have been times I could not wait,
I remember them well,
they turned out badly.
I will wait,
I will see the goodness of my Lord…
again…and again…and again.
Everything is grace.
God goes before me,
and so, having done all I can,
I stand,
I wait,
I serve,
knees knocking
hands shaking,
smiling watery,
way too woozy to walk.
This, my friends, I have realized,
is, truly, the only way to allow God to show up,
this IS faith and courage,
(if I can do anything myself, then I don’t need God –
and I won’t see God).
Yes, this what the battle looks like,
on any given day
for warriors of the light.

just as I am

Mary Oliver

my hero

I went to visit my sister, Nancy, yesterday evening at her home. On Tuesday she went through a 10 1/2 hour heart procedure. Much of the time she was awake. She was strapped down during this, and for 8 long hours afterward, as it was imperative that she didn’t move due to them going into her heart through both sides of her groin in both of her main arteries. Can you imagine?

My sister is a rock star! Not only does she look fantastic (you would truly never know she was one bit sick) but she has a huge sense of humor about it and the best attitude ever. I am so grateful for her example and, I know, if I ever experience anything like this, and as an aging human I probably will, I will make every effort to follow the example my sister has shown me. What an amazing and beautiful person she is. I am so grateful for her. So grateful for life and love and sisters.

6Big thanks to all my readers for all the prayer, for the Doctors and staff who worked so long and hard, for her amazing husband, Richard, for loving her so much, and for family. I am truly blessed and so grateful to God for peace and rest during this time.

Having God in my life does not mean I will never have a problem, it does not mean that my life won’t be messy or that bad things won’t happen to me. My faith means that I have help during these times, that I can trust there is more going on than my small slice of the picture, that I don’t have to worry or be anxious, because I am able to trust that this life unfolds just as it should and there is always love enough to get me through the dark. That’s what makes all the difference to me. Peace in the storm – it’s the most amazing way to live and anyone can have this gift. Where ever I am, Jesus will still be there. Best thing ever? Love such as this is free to all who choose it. Good stuff, my friends, very good stuff.

writing a poem

I fit words together,
hoping they mean something.
Wanting them to make sense.
Allowing them emotion.
Willing to give them freely.
Creating a monument,
for a moment in time,
to share with the world. photo
These words become something tangible.
A thing,
a gift,
a piece of art.
A part of me,
stays with them.
Little pieces of me,
like shapes in a puzzle,
becoming
a picture,
a flower,
a song.
Small particles of my soul,
like a rose bud,
opening in my hand,
mesmerizes with it’s
beauty,
touch,
fragrance.
I write words on a page,
and feel love
spreading outward,
as the flowering happens,
as this thought blooms.
As words become thoughts about…
As the pieces become beautiful…
As the poem is born, 5
of water,
blood,
star dust
and becomes…
a small piece of me,
left behind on pages,
for others to find,
sharing a small moment,
never to be lost,
because it has been
recorded,
acknowledged,
emptied.
Gratitude makes room for new
miracles,
learning,
beauty,
as they find their new home
ready,
emptied,
expectant.
Waiting for more
truth,
goodness,
love,
to flow and enter in. 6
There is always more,
and more than enough.
The heart that gives gathers,
but never tries to hold anything hostage.
Love,
giving,
pretty much everything,
about life,
only works when we allow it,
all of it,
every sacred cow,
every spec of mud,
to be free.
