We drift through this gray, increasing nowhere

Until we stand before a threshold we know

We have to cross to come alive once more.
May we have the courage to take the step

 Into the unknown that beckons us;

Trust that a richer life awaits us there,

 That we will lose nothing

 But what has already died;

Feel the deeper knowing in us sure

Of all that is about to be born beyond

The pale frames where we stayed confined,

Not realizing how such vacant endurance

 Was bleaching our soul’s desire.

What are waves to rocks

before they become

the softness of sand…

Is that not love?

Whoever said ferocity

cannot be kind

never saw the way a seed

is destroyed as it

comes alive.

     ~Joshua Israelievitch

If you want to succeed in your life, remember this phrase: The past does not equal the future. Because you failed yesterday; or all day today; or a moment ago; or for the last six months; the last sixteen years; or the last fifty years of life, doesn’t mean anything… All that matters is:

What are you going to do, right now?

     – Tony Robbins

I am so tired of waiting,

Aren’t you,

For the world to become good

And beautiful and kind?

-Langston Hughes

LIGHT AND DARKNESS
When we are touched by the presence of sacred wonder, we do not suddenly run away from the darkness and pretend that it does not exist. Nor do we try to explain away the darkness or become lost in angst over questioning how such darkness can possibly exist. Rather, seeing the greater divine light even a little, we start to see how our delusions only cause ourselves and others such suffering. This growing realization can then begin to slowly open our hearts to compassion and love, both for ourselves and for all other beings who toil in the darkness, caught in cycles of pain, fear, and ignorance. From this love also comes a growing commitment to fight the delusions and the darkness and to serve the light however we can. Indeed, each one of us can fight the darkness in our own ways and in our own time.
First, we can begin to fight our own delusions and grow spiritually as best we can. We can work toward our own awakening and strive to gain our own growing clarity of vision that allows us to see more and more the delusions for what they are and to see, beyond the delusions, the boundless preciousness of all life, including our own. We cannot truly begin to help others and the world until we begin to clear the clouds from our own eyes. And to do this, we need to start cultivating an open heart of loving-kindness for all life. The true end of suffering comes with the dawning of a deep wisdom that sees the transient, impermanent veneer, but also sees the very present and real luminous spiritual reality that flows through all of us. This requires a commitment to fight first our own intolerance, cruelty, arrogance, anger, and hatred. Change must start in our own hearts and minds and must start with exercising kindness towards ourselves and to those around us in our daily lives.
Second, we can work to not add to the darkness in our own corner of the world and work instead to shed whatever light we can, even if it is only in the small interactions with others in our daily lives. Our everyday interactions, no matter how humble, can call forth the divine light into our own lives and those around us, when we act with a kind and loving intention. It is certainly wonderful when good people affect positive change on a community wide or larger basis in society. Such efforts need to be supported and commended. But not all of us are always in a position to affect larger societal change. This does not stop us,however, from working quietly in our small corner of the world, bringing light to our own lives and bringing some light to those around us. Such efforts are not to be put down, but have infinite significance. Even a few lights in a darkened city shed beauty and wonder.

Indeed, the light of love, no matter how small, makes a difference, and the world will be healed only when all of the small corners are filled with light and love. And that will happen only when each of us makes that effort where we stand in the moment in our daily lives.

on the edge of flying.

the verge of breaking through

standing in the pouring rain

hoping to find you,

somewhere in the darkness

of this dark and stormy night,

questions with no answers

colliding with the light.

bloody battles all around,

I’m caught within my pain.

holding on to faith in something

in the middle of this fight.

at the end of living

not knowing what to do,

tears, they match the weather

flooding from my soul.

I shake my head for clearing,

prepare my heart to fight,

struggle to my aching feet

step into the ring of light.

death lies all around me,

as I pray this simple prayer,

release me for a moment,

there’s work for me to do.

For the dulness that encloses me I pray
your grace burn off the morning fog.

That the dream of doubt I wear like clothes

I pray may in your light dissolve, and fall away.

For healing of the wound that is a world that is a wall

between me and your delight, and mine, I pray.

From the coma of my fears awaken me

with your warming, seeing sun.

For my eyes, sleep-sealed and glazed, I pray

to see the nub and fullness of what is.

From the soft bed of my grave

raise me into this day amazed and new.

 The World Is in Pencil
—not pen.

It’s got

that same silken
dust about it,

doesn’t it,

that same sense

of
having been roughed

onto paper

even as it was planned.

It had to be a labor
of love.

It must’ve taken its author

some time, some shove.

I’ll bet it felt good
in the hand—

the o

of the ocean,

and
the and

of the land.

The World Is in Pencil by Todd Boss

Easter God,

roll away the stone

from the tomb of my heart.
Let the morning light

of your love

shine in.
As light forgives darkness,

fills it,

transforms it,
your love forgives me,

fills me,

transforms me.
I am not among the dead—

my guilt, my shame, my fear.

You have brought me to life.
The light of your love raises me,

sets me free,

leads me out into this new day,
beloved,

living,

new.

This is why we survive the winter

The world shows off

Flowers are bursting color

Flaming forsythia frames the river

Fuzzy trees and bushes make me squirmy happy

The sky beams blue

The water waves joyfully

The sand gladly greets,

us with our winter legs

(except for the hardcore tanning bed crowd – already too brown for the rest of us)

little girls and their tattooed fathers pick up shells and rocks

to fill purple buckets of heartwarming, serious cuteness

coconut oil floats deliciously on the warm breeze

I can’t stop smiling

Spring has sprung

Let love begin

Please,

give me some inspiration

away from the lights of retail obsession

after that quick thrill is gone

the empty thrill of addiction’s lie

what is left but emptiness?

Inspire me with true beauty

kindness

truth

the deep satisfaction of truth

replace the illusion of neon lights

plastic glamour

with the glory of what is real

to see my true self

the weighty value of love

the only water to quench the thirsty soul

the only inspiration which keeps us seeking more

while being full

at the same time

 Find the good.
   It is all around you.

      Find it, showcase it….

-Jesse Owens

look no further

But all your losses brought you here to walk
under one name and to walk under one name only,

and to find the guise under which all loss can live;

remember, you were given that name every day

along the way, remember, you were greeted as such,

and treated as such, and you needed no other name,

other people seemed to know you even before you gave up

being a shadow on the road and came into the light,

even before you sat down,

broke bread and drank wine,

wiped the wind-tears from your eyes:

pilgrim they called you again and again. Pilgrim.

The road seen, then not seen, the hillside hiding

then revealing the way you should take,

the road dropping away from you as if leaving you

to walk on thin air, then catching you, holding you up,

when you thought you would fall, and the way forward

always in the end the way that you came,

the way that you followed, the way that carried

you into your future, that brought you

to this place, no matter that it sometimes took

your promise from you, no matter that it always had to break

your heart along the way, the sense of having walked

from far inside yourself out into the revelation,

to have risked yourself for something that seemed

to stand both inside you and far beyond you,

that called you back in the end to the only road

you could follow, walking as you did, in your

rags of love and speaking in the voice

that by night, became a prayer for safe arrival…

uphold the integrity of the quest   – spoken @ Infusion Cincinnati

A GLIMPSE

The beauty of the imagination is that it can discover such magnificent vastness inside a tiny space. Our culture is dominated by quantity. Even those who have plenty hunger for more and more. Everywhere around us, the reign of quantity extends and multiplies. Sadly the voyage of greed has all the urgency but no sense of destination. Desire becomes inflated and loses all sense of vision and proportion. When beauty becomes an acquisition it brings no delight. When time seemed longer and slower, the eye of the beholder had more space and distance to glimpse the beautiful. There was a respect for the worlds that could be suggested by a glimpse.

 John O’Donohue

 Excerpt from BEAUTY

I steal glimpses of beauty,

in all she is –

this moment,

sky in my rearview.

A huge bowl of rainbow sherbet

my favorite-color-kind

with raspberry, orange & lime

swatches of lemon, indigo & periwinkle

float like barges –

in, out

&

around.

Framing.

Dancing.

Living.

At one point tangerine fills the top of the hilly crest,

headlight stars

blaze brilliant against the backdrop.

Indigo stretched above, framing this momentary masterpiece.

At times I find it hard to keep moving forward

into the matt gray of drudgery ahead.

With so much loveliness going on

right behind me…

how can I keep heading away from it?

How can I not be a part of this splendor?

Eventually, midnight blue seizes its moment of glory,

then night falls over all,

and I am left,

aching with the beauty,

the majesty,

the extravagant display,

of this wonderful world.

I go to wondering

if this longing in my heart

will ever be answered?

If my whole life I will wait

for a moment which will never come?

Will it never be realized under this piece of sky?

Will it always be this whisper?

The magic of hope,

this thing with wings,

hovering over my heart

for another 50 years,

echoing on into eternity.

conservation: only you can set your soul on fire

If you have one hour of air

And many hours to go,

You must breathe slowly.

If you have one arm’s length

and many things to care for,

You must give freely.

If you have one chance to know God

And many doubts, you must

Set your heart on fire.

We are blessed.

Each day is a chance.

We have two arms.

Fear wastes air.

morning blessing

photos by Fisherman Dan @ Branford, CT

I place on the alter of dawn:

 The quiet loyalty of breath,

The tent of thought where I shelter,

Waves of desire I am shore to

And all beauty drawn to the eye.
May my mind come alive today

 To the invisible geography

That invites me to new frontiers,

To break the dead shell of yesterdays,

To risk being disturbed and changed.
May I have the courage today

To live the life that I would love,

To postpone my dream no longer

But do at last what I came here for

And waste my heart on fear no more.

Excerpt from, ‘A Morning Offering’

TO BLESS THE SPACE BETWEEN US (US) / BENEDICTUS (Europe)

In the space between breaths

It can be gone

A months worth of words

Erased with a fingertip

A 12, 30 even 60 year marriage over

With 4 words spoken:

I want a divorce

A home with all it’s possessions

Destroyed in a matter of minutes in the fury of nature –

Fire or storm

Life

Love

So fragile

With no guarantees

Of longevity

Or comfort

Begs to be felt

Now

To be counted for the sake of goodness

This is the only moment that counts

The only thing eternal

Don’t wait

Take a deep deep breath

Of the spirit that is giving it all

Say thank you

For the only gift that matters

The only thing that remains

All else can be destroyed

When nothing else remains

What is this eternal gift,

given new every morning?

Love

When we walk on the earth with reverence, beauty will decide to trust us.   – John O’Donohue

love warriors walk through this world

love dripping from open hands

falling onto shattered pieces of the broken

staining bits of the kaleidoscope of hearts

stepping carefully

slowing down

as the ones who have forgotten to know

appear to do battle

not knowing what they have forgotten…

we are all the light

we are each the beloved..

please let me hold you

touch those wounded places

rub love on the sore spots

until you remember

what you already know

stay here with me

for a long long while

let’s walk together

connecting

hands

hearts

love

as we go

allowing the drip to become

a pour

a fountain

a river

an ocean

as we sail our sea green ship

into this mystic world beyond the stars

beyond the moon

and once again

find ourselves home in the sun

At the heart of things is a secret law of balance and when our approach is respectful, sensitive and worthy, gifts of healing, challenge and creativity open to us. A gracious approach is the key that unlocks the treasure of encounter. The way we are present to each other is frequently superficial. We become more interested in ‘connection’ rather than communion. In many areas of our lives the rich potential of friendship and love remains out of our reach because we push towards ‘connection.’ When we deaden our own depths, we cannot strike a resonance in those we meet or in the work we do. A reverence of approach awakens depth and enables us to be truly present where we are. When we approach with reverence great things decide to approach us. Our real life comes to the surface and its light awakens the concealed beauty of things. When we walk on the earth with reverence, beauty will decide to trust us. The rushed heart and the arrogant mind lack the gentleness and patience to enter that embrace. Beauty is mysterious, a slow presence who waits for the ready, expectant heart.

together in a hopeful world

Yesterday there was a facebook post from Jen Lemen over at Hopeful World http://hopefulworld.org (she’s one of my most admired people on the planet) telling me that it was a half-way-between-solstice moment and she would be burning a fire in celebration and prayer. If anyone wanted to be part…just say ‘yes’ and she would bring us! I said, ‘Yes, please’ as quickly as I could type it!!!
And so, last night, while I was sleeping…Jen Lemen was doing something so amazing, I get chill bumps every time I think about it!!! She was holding me, and mine, in that space between.

Yes, there was INTENTION, there was fire, there was singing, there was celebrating and grieving, there was prayer for the world, for everyone who requested it…and, Holy Batman, Batman, there was prayer for ME and all I hold within and without me.
What a gift! Beauty and all she is! Powerful and humbling! Encouraging and valuing! I feel it all this morning and I say, Thank you, Jen! Thank you, more than I can say! I am so blessed by you and your work!! 💞

I woke up to these words from Jen this morning:

Writing blessings. Saying prayers. May you be happy and peaceful. May no harm come to you. May no difficulty come to you. May you be deeply blessed. May you take care of anyone and everything smaller and sweeter than you are. May you surrender your power to make space for a forgotten voice. May you notice the earth and how she moves and breathes. May you say yes when you’re called and stay quietly beside until the time is right. May you become love and be love and find love and hope for more love, when others say it doesn’t matter or all hope is gone. #pathofprayerandpleasure #urbanfamily #bliss #mysticlife #blessings #imbolc #brigid #celticspring

🙏🏻

   – Jen Lemen @ Hopeful World

        http://hopefulworld.org

The poet gives you a little stone to stand on,

a ledge, a moment of the world or your own mind

to notice, to ground yourself in,

and from there to leap
maybe to another stone, a similar noticing,

maybe to another star, the light you are made of,

or a beauty pouring itself into you,

or maybe just leap all the way to God.
When you are praying

the smallest thing

can be what you stand on,

can be your prayer.
Any time, from even a single twig

you can leap

and wherever you land will be God.

The leaping is God.
