holding hands

I said to the man who stood at the gate of year:
“Give me a light that I may tread
safely into the unknown.”

And he replied, “Go into the darkness, and
put your hand into the hand of God:
That shall be to you better than light
and safer than a known way!”

As this year ends and gives way to a new one
think of it as a gift you have received.
In the joys and struggles, delights and losses,
grace has made its way into you.
Give thanks even if you don’t know what for.

Whatever regrets you have for the year just passed,
hand them over now. Without judgment,
place them in the hands of the Forgiving One
and let it all simply become part of your story.

Whatever hopes you have for the year to come,
trust it as another gift.
Be prepared to welcome the moment
each moment, with wonder and love.

Whatever resolutions you make for the new year,
know that a deeper current than what you want
or what you resolve is what God is doing in you.
Attend, and follow.

The new year will bring you grace.
May you receive it deeply.

ready?

When will he come
and how will he come
and will there be warnings
and will there be thunders
and rumbling of armies
coming before him
and banners and trumpets
When will he come
and how will he come
and will we be ready

O Come, Beloved,
in this night of our travail
in which we cannot see;
breathe with us, in us,
and be the saving arm around us.

O Life-making Word,
speak your light in our heartbreaking darkness,
and call this world into being anew.

O Borning God,
in the well of this deep night
wrap all our expectations in your mystery,
shroud in darkness all our knowing
of how you are among us,
bundle tightly our wisdom
in your smallest box,
and come to us otherwise.

O Intimate Dawning,
bear us through the night
and birth us into a new day,
changed,
infant,
breathing.

The authority of God made all creation. But it was the affection of God that made all His children.
You are made of the dust of this earth, and you are made of the happiness of heaven. You are flesh and you are spirit, and you are of two worlds longing for the home of forever and Him.
No matter your story before, this is your beginning now: you were formed by Love…for love.

the 🍏 project

IMG_4316.JPG
It all started about a month ago, Jen Lemen, over at Hopeful World http://hopefulworld.org/ showed up in my email inbox, which always makes me smile.

I enjoy Jen’s words, her heart, her search for love, her work in the world, and her vulnerability in being human. That day Jen wrote about baking her magic apple cake and sending one lucky reader a slice.

Well, seems like me, and about 45 or so others, were feeling lucky
and so we sent our requests to be selected!! Jen wrote a lovely response back saying such nice things and including, ‘You may have misread me, I only meant one person!’ and she sent the magical apple cake recipe (paraphrasing Jen’s words and loved her written recipe, which looked very interesting and yummy to the baker side of me).

IMG_4344.JPG
I totally got her panic and it made me laughed and reply something like, ‘one lottery selection is fine, and that I felt very lucky and knew I was going to be eating apple cake soon’

Then
next day. I believe, there arrives another message from Jen and this one says something along the lines of, ‘All the responses had made her think about community and what if we could all eat cake? All of the people could get slices of cake and tea and we could all eat from the same shared cake and we could all be connected in this very special way. Wouldn’t that be a really good thing to happen in the world?’

To which I said, ‘YAY!’

Well, I like this all very much and I am totally inspired by Jen’s Let Them Eat Apple Cake thoughts and words. And I am inspired, at that moment, by my local apple orchard, Bishop’s Orchard http://www.bishopsorchards.com/ who is at the very same time, doing their yearly Random Acts of Apples and delivering apples to people who need them. And by my friend, Robin OK, who had just been to visit me and had experienced apple karma and we had gone for apples for her trip, taken pictures of her in front of the apple sign at Bishop’s!

IMG_3292.JPG

IMG_3298.JPG
And so
I write Jen and I ask if she needs me to help? I would love to be part of this project and bake a few magical apple cakes and send them out, with much love, on her behalf (per her vision and instructions), and, the short version of what Jen said is, ‘Yes, thank you, that would be lovely.’

Over the past few weeks I have slowly and steadily prepared and walked toward the magic apples and over the past three days I have executed Operation Apple Cake! On the two year anniversary of my descent into the dark night of the soul, two years from arriving at a place of no hope, I stood in the light and baked two yummy apple cakes with so much joy, gratitude and hope which connected me to people from California to NJ and many places in between. Yesterday I mailed out my 15 boxes of chucky magic apple cake to amazing women I may never know, but will always be connected to through loving prayer and apple cake, and, I must say, I have not felt so good in many a moon!

IMG_4330.JPG
The post office people totally enjoyed the story of the apple cake for the world and have requested pieces for themselves, which is a wish I feel that I want to fulfill – they are a vital part of the cake delivery process, so, looks like I will be making more apple cake before this project is completed.

IMG_4350.JPG
Not everyone gets it, of course. I was telling a girl at the cafe about my appley project and she said, ‘Why would you do that? What do you get from them?’

At one time in life I would have tried to explain to her about how important these things are in the world. Now I just smile and say, ‘I get to have a happy heart!’ and I go my way with said happiness trailing along like Pigpen’s dust trails. Yes, surely, goodness and mercy follow me all the days of my life! (don’t call me Shirley 😃)

IMG_4396.JPG

I feel so fortunate to have been a part of this project, so blessed to be able to share, care and send love into the world one small box o’ cake at a time!

Thanks, Jen Lemen, for bringing hope and love into the world and allowing me to be a part of such a very cool project!

how do you wait?

IMG_4268.JPG
On January 17, 2012 I added these words to the ‘Other Words’ page of this blog…
Timing is everything. How do we wait on things we want more than life? How many times have I run ahead of God and not waited? Almost always. It never seems to get any easier for me, yet I have learned the value and the importance and so I struggle to incorporate this all important lesson into my life. Timing
learn timing
timing is everything. Wait for the right gift, wait for the best blessing, wait for exactly what you need to be prepared and given to you
in the fullness of time!

Help me, dear Lord! May I wait in peace and be ready for action when you show me the way!
💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
Here we are entering the time of year known as Advent aka Waiting for Jesus to Come.
The only way we can wait is if we believe the waiting will, ultimately, bring us all the things that have been promised! Then the waiting is worth it!
I believe! My foundation is built on solid rock and the roots of faith have grown down deep through the storms of life.
And so I wait the coming of what has been promised! For as long as it takes! I will focus and I will wait! ACL

Prepare your way in me, Lord,
prepare your way in me, my Lord.

Make my rough places smooth,
the crooked make straight, my Lord.

Lay your hand at my root,
that I may bear fruit, my Lord.

Come and empty my heart
of all things but you, my Lord.

Guide my feet in your way,
fill me with your peace, my Lord.

Prepare your way in me, Lord,
prepare your way in me, my Lord.

living gratitude

IMG_4161.JPG
Gratitude is not a passive response to something given to us, gratitude arises from paying attention, from being awake in the presence of everything that lives within and without us. Gratitude is not necessarily something that is shown after the event, it is the deep, a-priori state of attention that shows we understand and are equal to the gifted nature of life.

to intuit inner lives beneath surface lives, to inhabit many worlds at once in this world, to be a someone amongst all other someones, and therefore to make a conversation without saying a word, is to deepen our sense of presence and therefore our natural sense of thankfulness that everything happens both with us and without us, that we are participants and witness all at once.

Thankfulness finds its full measure in generosity of presence, both through participation and witness
Thanksgiving happens when our sense of presence meets all other presences.

Happy Thanksgiving! 👄

IMG_4174.JPG

Thanks-full for you

Ever meet someone who immediately fits right into your bones? Someone you just want to talk to for 5-10-unlimited days straight, just to see where the conversation could take you? Someone who speaks your language, makes you laugh AND gives you chill bumps in that brief encounter? sigh…I hope you have…cause it’s really good!

I walk in the whipping wind to reach my spot
At times I wonder why???
cause, Oh Baby, it’s cold outside…
Then I step on the beach,
and understanding breaks through,
here I am –
touching the Divine.
It’s crazy.
How could it be that someone like me,
someone simply ordinary,
with so many and varied,
flaws and imperfections,
can see and touch and breathe divinity?
Very God.
I stand,
humbled and grateful,
full of hope for this wonder-filled world.
The cold wind is directly in my face,
waves crash against rocks.
I am small and fragile,
here on the edge of the seagull flock
(I wonder, is that what a bunch of seagulls are called? a flock? a gaggle? a herd?)
I remember being here
almost two years ago now.
Remember how the seagulls taught me great lessons
about God’s care and love.
How different I was then.
The same sun shone,
but back then all was dark and frozen-still inside me.
Today I feel the sunshine in my very soul.
I stand and cry,
very cold, wet tears of overwhelming gratitude
as ‘To Make You Feel My Love’
plays in my pocket.
So much brokenness.
I have not forgotten.
I will never forget.
Yet here I am,
somehow on the other side of the great gulf of grief.
Somehow standing in the center of the light.
Somehow understanding things that I can’t humanly comprehend.
Somehow knowing without knowing.
Somehow beginning with each new morning,
a new joy,
a new journey,
a new birth,
a new song,
a new view,
a new life,
a new story,
a new adventure.
I bow in gratitude.
I know I must sing
because I carry songs which are ready to be sung,
to be birthed in the world.
Just as the birds on the wires above me, I sing
because I cannot NOT sing.
I sing because it is who I was created to be.
I sing because I’m happy.
I sing because I’m free.
His eye is on the sparrow –
and I am worth many sparrows!
I am beloved!
and
SO ARE YOU!
