What is to give light must endure burning. – Victor Frankl

20140718-104101-38461136.jpg

The wheat behind the orchard’s come into full head. It’s turning itself into pure gold. Things like this actually do become possible in the surrender.

Maybe just —Surrendering to time and what comes lets miraculous things happen.

Time unfolds that too: Never have I lived with anything as bewildering my own soul.

There is faith that in the midst of the setbacks, God is setting up everything for the comeback of your joy.

Who knows what tomorrow brings, what the sky will have blow in? Who knows what questions will rise like unexpected storm clouds, what questions will still remain? The yield always only comes in the yield.

The Farmer nods toward the fields in the thickening dark, “We’re all just living in a sea of faith.”

And for days afterwards, when I feel like I am drowning in questions and news and life, it rings me, like the answering song of the surrendered wind chimes—

That is all — we are all just living in a sea of faith.

What happens in the burn
when we are slowly dying
in the blaze of life’s most trying circumstances?
When our expectations go unfulfilled,
and everything we ever loved
is taken away?
What will we allow the fire to teach us?
What will we hold onto?
What will we let go of?
When the fire finally burns out
and someone blows the ashes
away from our remains.
Will they find light?
Will they find gold?

This face is all I have, worn and lived in
And lines below my eyes are like old friends
And this old hearts’ been beaten up
And my ragged soul has had things rough
And this face is all I have, worn and lived in

The fairest they can fall bored in believing
Something to achieve, this peaceful feeling
After all these tears are only true
And your silver spoons can’t dig up my roots
And this face is all I have, worn and lived in

Worn and lived in
Through the tides of time
Worn and lived in
This face of mine
And I kept believing, the reflection on the wall
Who needs to be the fairest of them all

I never looked like you, cool and streamlined
I have this honesty that grows with time
And when cracks appear they suit me fine
Like a good old dog you won’t hear me whine
And this face is all I have, worn and lived in

Worn and lived in
Through the tides of time
Worn and lived in
This face of mine
And I kept believing the reflection on the wall
Who needs to be the fairest of them all

Sins and lies, they take the place of truth and answers
You can trade a glance and call it second sight
You cannot buy sympathetic mirrors
And honesty is an answer you cannot find

And I kept believing the reflection on the wall
Who needs to be the fairest of them all

This face is all I have, worn and lived in
And lines below my eyes are like old friends
And this old hearts’ been beaten up
And my ragged soul has had things rough
This face is all I have, worn and lived in
And this face is all I have, worn and lived in

A journey continues until it stops
A journey that stops is no longer a journey
A journey loses things on its way
A journey passes through things, things pass through it
When a journey is over, it loses itself to a place
When a journey remembers, it begins a journal
Which is a new journey about an old journey
A journey over time is different from a journey into time
An actual journey is into the future
A reflective journey is into the past

***
A journey always begins in a place called Here
Pack your bags and imagine your journey
Unpack your bags and imagine your journey is done

If you’re afraid of a journey, don’t buy shoes

doing what’s right

Life is a chance to do things your way; not the cheapest way, not the most popular way, and not how others think you should.

And a very, very, very precious chance, at that.

Got chills?

Dearly Beloved,

Grace and Peace to you.

A sower went out to sow.
Some seeds fell on the path…
and the birds came and ate them up.
Other seeds fell on rocky ground…
and they withered away.
Other seeds fell among thorns…
and the thorns grew up and choked them.

Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain—
some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
—Matthew 13.3-8

God is the sower and you are the soil.
The Word finds its fertile places,
and grows in you.

God is the sower and you are the seed.
You are given to the world.
Though it may seem fruitless,
there will be a rich harvest.

You are the sower and love is the seed.
Though it seems wasted,
love will bear fruit.

Be patient, and trust.

It was just a jug of water
I took with me to the well

the stranger asked me for a drink
I choked on my reply,

why would I give you water, sir
when I am thirsty, dry?

and then he said
if you give to me
I will fill your cup
with things you’ve never had before
yes, I will fill you up

then I cried
here’s my cup
fill it up
fill it up
Here’s my whole jug of water
fill it up
Lord
fill it up

take the heart of my devises
make it new I recognize it
needs to know your love

take this life of broken chances
use it now for your devices
and let me share your love

it was just a blue sky summer morning
as I started to the well

then this stranger spoke my life,
the whole world stopped –
I choked on my reply,

how do you know me so well, sir
oh tell me, who am I?

and then he said
if you give to me
I will fill your heart
with things you’ve never had before
yes, I will fill you up

then I cried
here’s my heart
fill it up
fill it up
Here’s my whole heart, my life
fill it up
Lord
fill it up

as the sun set that evening
everything had changed
and my heart it was singing
all my life was rearranged
everything is different now
this strangers my best friend
Jesus came to live with me
I am loved
I know it’s true
this end is the beginning
this beginning is the end

Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
—Matthew 11.28-30

Jesus teaches no doctrine; he extends an invitation.
He preaches no creed; he offers a relationship.
He does not discuss theology; he practices a way of living.
He offers no reward, but his presence.

He invites us into the Great Work of being souls,
the Great Work of loving the world.
He promises to be yoked with us.

He offers the paradox of the labor that is rest,
the yoke that is freedom,
the burden that is light.

His Word is not an order, a threat, a pronouncement,
but a promise, an opening, a desire for us:
“Come to me.”

The burden we bear into the world
at his side
is not heavy; it is light itself, the light of God.

lessons

20140627-093440-34480745.jpg
Forever Oneness,
who sings to us in silence,
who teaches us through each other,
Guide my steps with strength and wisdom.
May I see the lessons as I walk,
honor the Purpose of all things.
Help me touch with respect,
always speak from behind my eyes.
Let me observe, not judge.
May I cause no harm,
and leave music and beauty after my visit.
When I return to forever
may the circle be closed
and the spiral be broader.

Do not think that I have come
to bring peace to the earth;
I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
I have come to set a man against his father,
and a daughter against her mother.
—Matthew 10.34-35

It’s not a sword of conflict or violence.
It’s the cutting edge of making choices,
splitting what you choose from what you don’t choose.
And making your choices will set you apart
from others, even friends and family.
This is the work of becoming your own self.

When your choices upset those around you
it may be because you’re being foolish.
But it may be because you’re making your choices
instead of letting them. It will be like this.
Abandon that owned self, and find your own self.

Listen deeply to God.
Let God alone lead you.
Make yourself available to God
as an instrument of righteousness,
and know that even as you let go of your life
you receive life.

Abba (breathe in) I belong to you (breathe out) – Brennan Manning

20140612-074902-28142309.jpg

Empowered to Receive Love

The Spirit reveals to us not only that God is “Abba, Father” but also that we belong to God as his beloved children. The Spirit thus restores in us the relationship from which all other relationships derive their meaning.

Abba is a very intimate word. The best translation for it is: “Daddy.” The word Abba expresses trust, safety, confidence, belonging, and most of all intimacy. It does not have the connotation of authority, power, and control, that the word Father often evokes. On the contrary, Abba implies an embracing and nurturing love. This love includes and infinitely transcends all the love that comes to us from our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, spouses, and lovers. It is the gift of the Spirit.

Holy One,
Mysterious Love,
“I Am,”

I wonder; I surrender.

Gentle Christ,
Self-Pouring
Companion,

I thank you; I love you.

Holy Spirit,
Divine Breathing,
Emerging love,

I bear you; I follow you.

THE POSSIBLE CAUSE OF INVISIBILITY

20140611-090117-32477549.jpg

A somebody walks into a somewhere and meets a someone.

‘Why haven’t I seen you before’ said the somebody, on recognizing a brilliant indefinable light set deep in the bones of the someone.

The someone then sets forth with the usual catalog of tall tales. Each a credible explanation that would more than likely stand up to the strongest of winds.

But, as ever, the true cause of this seeming invisibility was the absence of an answer to a single profound question.

AM – I – WILLING – TO – BE – SEEN – NO – MATTER – WHAT?
