You can watch life. Or actually play life. And only one way wins. – Ann Voskamp

That just calls for repeating!! Did you and I really get that?
One more time…slowly…

You can watch life. Or actually play life. And only one way wins.

So your space won’t look normal, and so your space won’t be comfortable, and so your space won’t be standard or steady or safe. Make your space and play anyway.
You don’t have to know if you have what it takes.
You just have to know that you will take what you’ve been given and make something of that.
Days when you will just have to salvage time planks. Because you don’t get space and time. You get given the materials to make time and space. Days when you will have to make space.
Days when you will have to make your own field — and then go be out standing in it.

being human

20140111-111822.jpg

I spot one.
a coin laudro-mat
I feel blessed to be able to wash my clothes.
towels and unmentionables.
a small bag.
I walk into the familiar,
yet for a while now,
Blessedly Unfamiliar.
I remember the years of this in my life
my most missed luxury in all of life
was washing and drying clothes
at home.
So hard this part of life became.
So challenging and humbling.
$4.50 to wash
a quarter for 5 minutes to dry.
I struggle to adjust.
I hadn’t planned on this.
I don’t look the part today.
I have to ask questions to reacquaint myself with this system.
Here in the midst of
hard working and living men,
tired mothers and crying babies,
the immigrants and struggling,
These to whom I belong.
those who make their living
through making clean the dirty.

I stand and watch the circle go round
Hot tears stinging my eyes
I remember.
Those days.
Those tough as nails days.
Plunged from luxury to poverty
in a heartbeat break of life.
So soon we forget…
So quickly we remember…
I watch the water rise –
I didn’t put in enough soap.
There are no suds.
I pray that hot water I chose
for those 2 extra, hard earned quarters,
will do it’s work
and my clothes will smell good.
I will not prolong my stay –
or use more of my precious coins.

I pray each of our guardian-laundry angels
will bless each of us
doing laundry every day
in all types of conditions.
This would be pure luxury in parts of this world.
I pray for grace.
I pray to remember.
I pray to be grace.
I pray to be The Words of God to heal the broken.
I pray for grace.
I pray for the crying baby,
and the tired man,
whose current outfit could use a good washing itself.
I pray for the immigrant family,
quietly folding together,
speaking Spanish in hushed voices.
I pray for the fabulous girl at the dryers,
with the faux Burberry scarf flung jauntily over her shoulder,
I hope to carry myself with such flair and dignity.
We are all here –
Bearing the high cost,
and inconvenience,
of poverty in our society.

I pray as quiet tears run.
I stand in my washer’s corner hoping nobody sees my memories.
I blow my over-productive nose.
and give thanks for all things.
Especially that I have known these struggles.
That I know how this feels.
That I am part of this humanity.
Not separate
I am one with all God’s created people.
All seeking clean clothes,
washing machines
and hope.

The crying baby starts to laugh
I smile as well.
God is always good
I am always blessed –
If I am willing to see the blessings –
even if it takes years to see them.

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day. –Edith Lovejoy Pierce

Why not grow roses in your soul?

Don’t try to invent them,
it’s been done.
Don’t labor over making them,
it will happen.

Ask what the Beloved is doing in you,
ask again and again,
slowly,
until you see.

Ask what you can do to help,
to clear the space,
to hold the light,
and that will be your path.

And promise that no matter
how disappointingly plain
or outrageously beautiful the results,
you will husband the fruits
of God’s work in you.

Even if you spend the whole year
simply wondering
it will be a splendid year.

surrender to the longing of our hearts

Let us be the answer to Your prayer with others. We are all seeking to know You. Our deepest part. Our most intimate longing is to know we are loved. That we are whole. That we are enough. That we are ok in being less than perfect, than what others, and our own longing hearts, want us to be. Our greatest fear is that we are not enough.
Allow us to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that You love every tiny part of us that. That You created us to know our own value and beauty. That we are truly Your beloved.
And as we know this amazing truth from You, allow us to share that astounding, life changing, truth with everyone You bring to us. Allow us to live You in every heart beat, so that what we have come to know by heart will go on as harvest and the world will be changed and healed with every light that shines into every darkness. Let us be Your city on a hill so that Your grace pours down around our ears and drowns us in glory and goodness. Thank You for loving us so much. Help us to live like we believe.

the missionaries prayer

God of love,
I Pray for the peace of Christ:
in the face of fear, to trust,
in the face of violence, to be gentle,
in the face of sorrow to be healing,
in all things to offer blessing.

Christ, grant me your peace:
with those who are rejected to stand in unity,
for those who are afraid to offer my hand,
beside the outcast to sojourn in longing,
to those who are cursed to offer blessing.

Spirit of compassion,
be the grace and strength in me
to risk for the sake of justice,
to suffer for the sake of healing,
to give of myself for the sake of love,
to offer blessing, to offer blessing.

Life is a succession of lessons, which must be lived to be understood. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Knowing Is Not Enough; We Must Apply

by Brian Johnson

“Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.” ~ Bruce Lee from Striking Thoughts

d33784b4066d46ae054bf41e2f5a2ef4This is a HUGE theme of all these Notes and Optimal Living 101.

Knowing something is nice, but it means NOTHING if we don’t actually apply it to our lives. As we often say, THEORY (or knowing something) is RUDIMENTARY philosophy. PRACTICE (or actually living a truth) is the advanced stuff.

Are you spending all your time in theory—simply talking about all the stuff you believe to be true? Or, are you focused on LIVING it?

Vernon Howard puts it brilliantly in The Power of Your Supermind: “You see, knowing the words is not the same thing as living the meaning. Suppose I memorize the printed instructions on a first-aid kit. Does that mean I can give first aid? No. The full meaning comes when I admit I know nothing and then try, practice, succeed.”

Let’s take another moment for reflection.

What’s the #1 thing you KNOW would be great for you to do but you just haven’t gotten yourself to make an essential part of who you are?

* Insert Jeopardy music *

“Upon reflection, it’s clear to me that, although I *know* this is important and would have huge positive benefits in my life, I haven’t yet made this knowledge an essential part of my day- to-day living:

I hereby commit to rockin’ it. Amen.”

If you do nothingaeb8035f3aa13a315e04ea5a542a2951
Nothing will be done.
Sounds like we should know this,
right?
It’s just fascinating for me to see
this in practice,
the result of a decision to create a newsletter,
then to commit to creating that publication for one full year.
Now, 6 full years later,
as I end that project,
to make way for new projects,
there are over 135 issues
on a website devoted to that good thing.
I decided to begin a daily poetry and quotes blog,
(hello reader :))
I now have around 800 blog posts
chock-full of good stuff.
Last December, I committed to a poem a day.
11 months later,
I have almost 600 poems written.
It’s crazy cool!
And it has been a huge lesson to me,
Dreams and Ideas are great,
but only the commitment, focus
and actually acting on the idea,
will call it forth into the world. 2ade99f8d568b5b090b2ff266a3e4cac
All those words, ideas and poems would still be inside me somewhere,
if I had not said, yes,
to DOING it –
every damn day.
Nothing gets done without the work.
Intention and action go together
then the magic happens.
Doing the work is essential,
in order to build the house,
in order to change the world.

the highest purpose of art is to inspire. What else can you do for anyone but inspire them? – Bob Dylan

aliveI realized a long time ago you can’t force anyone to do, or see, anything. The old sayin’ ‘you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” is very true. I learned the hard way, you can’t ‘help’ anyone else, you can’t choose for anyone else, you can’t make someone love you, you can’t give someone something they don’t want – even if it’s the best gift ever. Force never works, only grace can change our hearts and lives. Falling in love with unconditional love is the only process to real change.

The only thing we CAN do is create an atmosphere for that to happen. Create an open space to inspire. Starting with myself – I seek to inspire people to think about these things. To think about life and to realize we are continually making choices and those choices matter for the short term and the long term. Our choices determine who we become, how we create, and how we inspire.

I’m beginning my week thinking about new ways to inspire, about how to make choices to be the best I can be, about how to love more and better, how to let go of the things that hold me prisoner and soar into the freedom of unconditional love, how to create good in the middle of difficult circumstances, how to better reflect light into my own darkness.

I am not sure where these thoughts, prayers and meditations are leading me this morning, but they feel good, as my friend, Jana, described yesterday, they are leading me to a feeling of triumph. Good stuff for a Monday morning in August!
